Disabled swimmers and their carers are being encouraged to take advantage of one of Wales’ most accessible beaches this summer.

The Blue Lagoon, set in the heart of the Bluestone National Park Resort, is promoting the facility’s “beach”, which has been carefully designed to simulate the ocean whilst being fully accessible by wheelchairs.

After temperatures in Pembrokeshire hit the high twenties last month, bosses at the resort said they recognised that people were heading to the beach, but for many that’s just not practical.

“At Blue lagoon we want our philosophy of free range fun to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their abilities,” said Blue Lagoon Manager Ian Darbyshire.

“At Bluestone, we encourage all of our guests to get out and explore the best of what Pembrokeshire has to offer, including some of the world’s most stunning beaches, but for some that can be a great challenge.

“At the Blue Lagoon the tropical water park is fully accessible with wide entryways, lifts, disabled changing rooms.

“There is also a hoist available for carers own use (users have to provide their own sling) and an aqua chair for easy access into the water. The water’s edge is sloped just like a beach making our pool accessible for everyone.”

From the main car park the Blue lagoon has several designated Disabled bays to provide ample space for those who need it.

“As you approach the main building, you will notice the doors will be wide open into the main foyer, in the centre of the turnstiles there is a gate for a more assessable entry into the changing village,” added Ian.

The blue lagoon now adopts a carer’s free policy; meaning anyone that will be caring for a disabled person in the pool will gain free entry into the Blue lagoon water park no matter the time of day or season.

“Our friendly reception team will ask for proof from the carer,” said Ian.

“We are aware that every disability is different and we do take a common sense approach to allowing entry. Here at the Blue lagoon we endeavour to be equally inclusive, our teams are friendly and flexible so if you have any questions don’t be afraid to ask and we will always try to accommodate your needs.”
