A group of families from the Pembroke Dock area were rewarded with family tickets to the Blue Lagoon water park near Narberth during a Families and School Together initiative (FAST) graduation ceremony.

The celebration, which took place at Pembroke Dock Community School on Tuesday, 8th July, was in recognition of the hard work undertaken by 25 families on the eight-week programme supported by Save The Children UK.

FAST consists of eight weekly after-school sessions where children and parents take part in activities to improve educational outcomes and wellbeing.

The reward of Blue Lagoon tickets came as a surprise to the families, who each took to the stage to be awarded with their certificate of achievement after successfully completing the programme.

The evening was attended by supporters from the area, including families and friends of the participants, school teachers, local councillor Sue Perkins and Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Pam George.

Debbie Rainbow, Director of Human Resources at Bluestone, says: “It’s an honour to be able to provide these inspiring families with a day out at the Blue Lagoon that they so richly deserve. It’s fantastic to see a programme like FAST being implemented in our area, helping to provide children with a successful and happy future.”

The FAST programme, which was developed in 2010, has been implemented in 204 primary schools across the UK – with Pembroke Dock Community School being the first to take on the initiative in Wales.

At the end of the eight week FAST programme the families attend monthly community meetings run by graduated FAST families to continue the support and provide a lasting legacy.

The results have proven life-changing – in 2012 teachers reported that among children who took part in FAST behavioural problems have decreased by 20% and the majority of parents in the programme have felt more able to support their child’s education and contribute to the governance of their child’s school.
